a tract house transformation, this project reimagined what the interior of a typical suburban Las Vegas home could be.
the owners, having moved from the beach cities of Southern California where they lived in a small but cozy 800 sf bungalow, knew they had to immediately transform their new house into a place that more closely matched their modern aesthetics. While the HOA guidelines’ prescription towards homogeneity of the community have kept any major revisions to the exterior at bay, the interior living spaces have been completely remodeled.
a fireplace that separated what was once a separate family and formal living room was removed to provide a much more open floor plan in addition to creating a much needed dining room. other than what was apparently intended to be an eat-in-kitchen, the original plan had no dining space that would meet the needs of the client’s love of entertaining.
the original kitchen, which consisted of only a single drawer, was completely demolished and replaced with a much more usable layout including an freestanding island with additional storage space and stool seating. The new cabinets, appliances and plumbing fixtures were all purchased as cost-efficient, off-the-shelf items found from the local hardware store.
a bamboo wood floor was installed to replace the drab grey carpet to bring warmth and texture to the space. bamboo, a wood that is quickly replenishable, was selected for its eco-friendliness. with two small children, the clients knew their furniture selections would be a temporary solution. Nevertheless, their desire for the modern had to be resolved. The furniture was mostly selected from Ikea and West Elm to keep the costs low for items that would probably be subject to toddler delinquency.
