desert living… what is possible?
desert design… what is appropriate? this project answers these two questions.
appropriate design chooses to respond to the climate so that its inhabitants may experience the natural environment in lieu of avoiding it.
the project is conceived as a grouping of modestly scaled buildings placed about the site to promote an outdoor lifestyle as one moves from one to another.
the project's outdoor spaces are given as much consideration as their interior counterparts so that they become integral to daily life.
oriented to minimize the harshest sun exposures and invite the desirable ones, the building's forms are skinned with a variety of materials including corrugated metal, concrete panels, and insulated concrete block.
the modest one story living area is placed along the street frontage to address the neighborhood at a human scale while the two-story bedroom component is placed toward the rear to provide privacy for its occupants.
the rear façade is dominated by large, sliding glass panels dissolving the separation of interior and exterior as they open to a private exterior courtyard.
